Improved transport networks

Wellington needs transport infrastructure that makes it faster, cheaper and easier for people to move around our city.

Space is the biggest constraint to Wellington having an effective transport network. Cars are particularly spatially inefficient (because they are big relative to the number of people they carry).

The only way to relieve congestion and transport issues is to put infrastructure and reliable services in place that have a higher throughput to space ratio than cars do.

  1. Public transport priority lanes are the only way Wellington Council can make Public Transport cheaper or more efficient. These improve the operating economics for bus service providers and allow per trip costs to be reduced.

  2. Cycle lanes and pedestrian upgrades allow people to walk or bike instead of drive shorter trips. This reduces the pressure on transport pinch points and improves overall transport network efficiency.

Specifically I propose:

  1. Completing critical public transport priority upgrades including the Golden Mile and Quays.

  2. A new bus priority link from Miramar and the Eastern Suburbs into town along Cobham Drive.

  3. Building the bike lanes Wellington needs by completing the cycle lane network as originally committed to by Wellington City Council.

This will have positive results for our transport network including:

  1. Cheaper, faster and more reliable public transport.

  2. Safer bike and walking journeys that are more fun.

  3. Less congestion meaning shorter drive times.

  4. Guaranteed emissions reductions from increased public transport use and walking and cycling.

This will also have positive results for:

  1. You get around town faster and cheaper no matter where you are going or how you choose to get around.

  2. Lower costs attracts more people to our city and spreads rates costs across more people, allowing everyone to pay less.
