Who is Alex?

As a professional

I have strong strategic finance skills and was a qualified Chartered Accountant. I have broad private sector experience across financial services and infrastructure developed in my time at KPMG in Audit and Corporate Finance. I also have deep public sector experience in housing, urban development, energy and sustainability from my time as a senior leader at Kāinga Ora.

I am an excellent strategic thinker and have a proven track record effectively managing large budgets and delivering high impact projects. I have experience getting things done on time and on budget in the public sector.

I am one of New Zealand’s leading experts in the application of emissions reduction, climate change resilience and sustainability strategies to urban environments.

In the workplace I have a reputation of being highly collaborative and fun to work with. I am decisive and bring a sense of clarity to challenging issues. I am always keen to teach and grow those around me, but also recognise I don’t know everything and am keen to learn.

As a person

I am fun, outgoing and energetic. I love music and the outdoors, playing guitar and singing, and can be found out in the bush on a hunting trip, at the pub, playing golf or working on my garden. I have also spent a substantial amount of time in voluntary pest control and bush restoration projects.

I live on the Evans Bay side of the hill with my partner and two young daughters.

As Mayor

I will shape the city strategy for Wellington into one that grows our ability to support well paying jobs, controls housing, transport and rates costs (and commute times) and increases sustainability.

I will bring tight commercial discipline to Wellington Council, ensuring ratepayers’ money is spent effectively and sensibly and will support the council to effectively prioritise decision making focussed on growing the value and resilience of the city’s strategic and financial assets.

I will ensure that Council decision making is focused on leading Wellington into a prosperous future. I also recognise that change can create difficult circumstances for people in the present which I will make all efforts to alleviate.

I will ensure the city has the right governance in place to deliver key projects it has underway and plan the ones it needs for the future.
